How To Change Your FeedBurner Feed When You Switch To WordPress

[ 17 ] April 19, 2010 |

I have seen a lot of people lately confused about how to edit their FeedBurner feeds after they switch to WordPress or buy their own domain name. It is really a very simple process, but I realize it can be confusing for some who are skittish about techie things. I will also show you how to add your feed to a “subscribe by email” widget on your blog.

The first thing you need to know is that in WordPress, your feed URL is simply your domain name with “/feed”  ( http://LastShredsOfSanity.com/feed) at the end of it. In Blogger it is http://yourblogname.blogspot.com/feeds/posts/default or if you have your own domain name on Blogger it will look like this http://yourblogname.com/feeds/posts/default. The easiest way to find this in either blog platform is to  right click on the screen and choose “view page info”. You will then get a pop-up box. In the top of that box will be an RSS icon. Click it. You will then be shown the feed URL for the website you are viewing.

See? Easy. If you know the shortcuts.

On to FeedBurner.

If you have switched from Blogger to WordPress, you will need to change where FeedBurner pulls your feed from. Now that you have your RSS feed URL, this will be simple.

Log into your FeedBurner account. Then click the feed you want to change.

Up at the top you will see “edit feed details”. Click it.

Where it says “original feed”, you will put your RSS feed URL. Where it says “Feed address”, you can name your feed anything you want. I named mine LastShredsOfSanity.com. It’s so original, I know.

Click “Save feed Details”.

Done.

Now you can take the name you anointed your feed with and plug  just that part that is in the box into whatever email subscription widget you have on your blog. In WordPress, it is usually built into the theme. In Blogger, you would simply get the email feed subscription right off of the FeedBurner site by clicking the “Publicize” tab and following the directions.

I was curled up in a fetal position, openly weeping, until I found your website. This post (and the transferring google friends connect one) were so helpful. You saved me! If you are in the Detroit area and like to drink beer, I owe you a tall, frosty one. Thank you! :)

Glad I could help. Blogger/Google doesn’t let this info out there to be easily found. They don’t really like it when people move from their Socialist hosted blogs (They have control, you don’t) to the freedom of WordPress self-hosting. :P I had to do some digging and get help from others when I was in the same boat. Unfortunately I’m not in Detroit, I’m in SoCal. But if I ever am in the area, I’ll take you up on the drink. :D

Changing the feed address is not a good idea if you have good subscriber count. If you change the feed address, you need to update your subscribers about the feed url change. Just changing the original feed is enough.

It was SO simple. Yet it took forever to find a post that explained the simple switch in edit feed name. Thank you.

    Pam says:

Hello, I need some help please? I am not tech savvy and recently changed my feedburner feed address. Now, my blog is not updating on my friends’ sidebars. They still see the last post I wrote before the change. When they delete my blog from their blogger sidebars and try adding it again, it still shows the old post–not updates. What do I need to do?
    Thank you!

I did not do the delete feed and 30-day redirect step, because at the time, I didn’t know about it.

    Thank you!

How did you change your feed address? It doesn’t look as though you have a custom domain name, so what did you change? Did you check that you have all the publicize things checked in FeedBurner? Make sure any widgets you have for people to subscribe with are correct and not pulling from the old feed.

Sometimes, because Google and FeedBurner can be huge PITAs, it takes a few days for the new feed to cycle through and update. How long ago did you make the change?
