<p><strong><a href="http://lastshredsofsanity.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/11/cmab_header.jpg"><img class="alignleft size-medium wp-image-7796" title="cmab_header" src="http://lastshredsofsanity.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/11/cmab_header-300x148.jpg" alt="cmab header 300x148 Smart And Final And The California Milk Advisory Board Help Local Schools ~ Plus A Yummy Au Gratin Potato Recipe" width="300" height="148" /></a>Smart and Fina</strong>l has teamed up with the <strong>California Milk Advisory Board</strong> in the <em><strong><a href="http://redirectingat.com?id=20541X781770&xs=1&url=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.scholastic.com%2Fbrowse%2Farticle.jsp%3Fid%3D3756380&sref=rss" target="_blank">Help Our Teachers, Help Our Kids</a> </strong></em>campaign. It works much like the Box Tops For Education campaign, only these seals are on Real California Milk products (except those sold on school premises). Students &amp; families collect Real California milk seals from select <strong>First Street</strong> products, then teachers submit seals to the CMAB. Each seal counts as one sweepstakes entry. Teachers who submit 100 seals get 25 Scholastic books or a $25 school supply gift card. Each teacher entrant gets one Scholastic book. The winners will be announced in February, 2012.</p>
<p>But wait, there&#8217;s more:</p>
<blockquote><p><strong>Smart &amp; Final is doing a separate sweepstakes.</strong> Entrants who go to <strong><a title="First Street Supports SoCal Schools" href="http://redirectingat.com?id=20541X781770&xs=1&url=http%3A%2F%2FFirstStreetSupportsSoCalSchools.com&sref=rss" target="_blank">FirstStreetSupportsSoCalSchool<wbr>s.com</wbr></a></strong> and tell them why their SoCal school should win will be entered into the  monthly sweepstakes where their school of choice could win $500, $300 or $200! There will be a total of NINE winners, that&#8217;s 3 per month, from those that enter at the site! Use the hashtag <strong>#SmartFinalSupportsSoCalSchools</strong> in any tweets about this program and help spread the word!</p></blockquote>
<p><a href="http://redirectingat.com?id=20541X781770&xs=1&url=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.scholastic.com%2Fbrowse%2Farticle.jsp%3Fid%3D3756380&sref=rss"><img class="alignright size-full wp-image-7798" title="345x196" src="http://lastshredsofsanity.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/11/345x196.png" alt="345x196 Smart And Final And The California Milk Advisory Board Help Local Schools ~ Plus A Yummy Au Gratin Potato Recipe" width="340" height="193" /></a>We all use dairy products in our daily lives, why not buy ones that could help your child&#8217;s school? With educational budgets being severely cut in this never-ending recession, teachers having to buy their own classroom supplies &#8212; and, let&#8217;s face it, teachers don&#8217;t get paid nearly enough for what they do &#8212;  their already thin budgets are stretched even thinner. But the beauty of this contest is that  you can help just by purchasing the Real California Milk products you already use and giving the seals to your child&#8217;s teacher to send in! It&#8217;s so easy. And by telling Smart and Final why your local school is deserving, you can help even more. It&#8217;s a win-win. Or as Charlie Sheen would say, &#8220;WINNING!&#8221; Or was that Vatican Assassin? <em>I forget.</em></p>
<p><em>Moving on.</em></p>
<p>In addition to posting about this wonderful sweepstakes, Smart and Final has asked me to share a <strong>Thanksgiving (Or Christmas) recipe</strong> that utilizes First Street/Real California Milk products. I picked a good one. It&#8217;s a family favorite that we all look forward to each holiday season. When I called my Uncle Bill to ask if  Aunt Lyla would give me the recipe, I could swear I almost heard him drooling. All he said was &#8220;Oh, those are so good and so cheesy!&#8221;</p>
<div>
<p>And they are.</p>
<blockquote><p>In my family, we have some pretty strong holiday traditions. If there is any deviation from those traditions, it just doesn&#8217;t feel right. Two of my favorites have to do with food. Well, what&#8217;s Thanksgiving and Christmas without some really great food? Isn&#8217;t that part of the whole point? Anyway, back to my faves &#8212; my Mom&#8217;s stuffing and my <strong>Aunt Lyla&#8217;s Lip-Smackin&#8217; Potatoes Au Gratin</strong>. Now I can&#8217;t reveal the family stuffing recipe, but my Aunt has given me permission to share the spuds with all of you. Man, oh, man do these go great with turkey and all the trimmings. Or baked ham. That&#8217;s pretty tasty, too. Believe me, once you try these you will never go back to the boxed stuff. Be sure you make enough to have left-overs, or you may end up with a frown. One Thanksgiving, my cousin Patty teased me mercilessly because she got the last of her mom&#8217;s potatoes. That was a very sad day&#8230;</p></blockquote>
<p>My mouth is watering just typing this up&#8230;</p>
<blockquote>
<p style="text-align: center;"><strong>Aunt Lyla&#8217;s Lip-Smackin&#8217; Potatoes Au Gratin</strong></p>
<p style="text-align: left;">Tools:</p>
<p style="text-align: left;">Food processor or sharp knife</p>
<p style="text-align: left;">Measuring cup</p>
<p style="text-align: left;">Shallow baking dish, preferably with lid <em>(Can use foil)</em></p>
<p><strong><em>Ingredients:</em></strong></p>
<p>4 Tbs. <strong>First Street salted butter </strong><em>(CMAB product)</em></p>
<p>2 to 3 tsp. salt</p>
<p>2 large white onions, thinly sliced</p>
<p>½ tsp. pepper <em>(Fresh cracked pepper is better)</em></p>
<p>6 White Rose potatoes, peeled &amp; thinly sliced <em>(Unless you have the knife skills of a Food Network star, I strongly recommend using a food processor. All your slices will be uniform and cook more evenly. I use the Cuisinart Duet. It&#8217;s fabulous.)</em></p>
<p>1 ½ cups sweet cream/whipping cream or combine cream &amp; half &amp; half</p>
<p>6 oz <strong>First Street Jack cheese </strong><em>(CMAB product)</em>, shredded (I suppose you could do three ounces of each, if you are so inclined or use Havarti instead of Swiss.)</p>
<p><strong>First Street </strong>Cheddar cheese, grated, enough to cover top of casserole</p>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<p style="text-align: center;"><a href="http://lastshredsofsanity.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/11/Aunt-Lylas-AuGratin-Potatoes.png"><img class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-7815" title="Aunt Lylas AuGratin Potatoes" src="http://lastshredsofsanity.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/11/Aunt-Lylas-AuGratin-Potatoes.png" alt="Aunt Lylas AuGratin Potatoes Smart And Final And The California Milk Advisory Board Help Local Schools ~ Plus A Yummy Au Gratin Potato Recipe" width="560" height="420" /></a></p>
<p style="text-align: center;"><em> There is no image of the finished product because my Husband dove into them as I was getting the camera. But trust me, they&#8217;re yummy!</em></p>
<p><em><strong>Cooking instructions:</strong></em></p>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<p>Preheat oven to 350 degrees.</p>
<p>Line baking dish with bits of  butter.</p>
<p>Cover dish with some of the sliced onion then a layer of potatoes and cheese.</p>
<p>Sprinkle salt and pepper as you make layers.</p>
<p>Continue with another layer until all onions, potatoes, butter and cheese are used.</p>
<p>Pour cream over entire pan. Cover and bake for 1 hr at 350 degrees. Uncover and bake for an additional 30 minutes until brown, gooey and bubbly.</p>
<p style="text-align: left;">Serves 8.<strong> </strong></p>
<p style="text-align: left;"><strong>Enjoy!</strong></p>

NINETY degrees. <span style="font-weight: bold; font-style: italic;">Umm, hello?</span> I have a huge dinner to cook, one oven and no central air. It&#8217;s NOVEMBER for God&#8217;s sake!</span></p>
<p><span style="color: rgb(51, 51, 153);font-family:trebuchet ms;" ><span style="font-weight: bold; font-style: italic;">Did you hear that?</span> <span style="font-weight: bold;">N-O-V-E-M-B-E-R.</span> As in one month until Christmas. As in the Holiday Season. As in&#8230;well, you get my point.</span> </p>
<p><span style="color: rgb(51, 51, 153);font-family:trebuchet ms;" >We are supposed to be all dressed in cozy sweaters, boots and eating a hot, calorie laden, but oh so good meal. When it is that hot out here, all I want to do is be as still as possible so as not to generate any more heat than is necessary for my body to function properly. As you can guess, that is not very conducive to getting a full Thanksgiving meal prepared, cooked and on the table by mid afternoon.</span></p>
<p><span style="color: rgb(51, 51, 153);font-family:trebuchet ms;" >Why are you mixing the seasons up on a daily basis around here? It may be predicted to be 90* on Thanksgiving, but it will be in the mid 40&#8242;s that night!! Talk about your hot flashes!</span></p>
<p><span style="color: rgb(51, 51, 153);font-family:trebuchet ms;" >And don&#8217;t even get me started on those devil Santa Ana winds!</span></p>
<p><span style="color: rgb(51, 51, 153);font-family:trebuchet ms;" >Yes the winds are blowing like a freight train as we speak. It&#8217;s supposed to be FALL, not Summer, Lady. The nasty winds give me atrocious migraines, dry out my skin and eyes, congest my sinuses <span style="font-style: italic; color: rgb(102, 0, 204);font-family:lucida grande;" ><span style="font-family:lucida grande;">{And those of my family}</span> </span>and make it difficult to sleep. Not to mention the horrendous amount of shit that gets blown into my yard that I have to clean up. I have enough messes of my own, I do not need to have the added task of cleaning up other people&#8217;s trash from my yard.</span></p>
<p><span style="color: rgb(51, 51, 153);font-family:trebuchet ms;" >Oh and let us not forget what Santa Ana winds <span style="font-style: italic; font-weight: bold;">truly</span> mean in SoCal&#8230;<span style="font-weight: bold; font-style: italic; color: rgb(153, 0, 0);">FIRE</span>. Yes fire. As in forest, brush and arson. Every psycho with a hard on for flames will be trying to set something ablaze right now. They always do. This <span style="font-style: italic; font-weight: bold;">is</span> SoCal, we have dry tinder brush, a severe lack of rain and more village idiots per capita than any other state in the Union. You think this little wind episode is going to pass without at least one wind whipped fire? I think not. And the chances that it will be caused by spontaneous combustion is slim and none.</span></p>

<p><span style="color: #333399; font-family: trebuchet ms;">Miss Ro, sorry,</span><span style="font-style: italic; color: #333399; font-family: trebuchet ms;"> Miss Princess Ballerina Butterfly Ro,</span><span style="color: #333399; font-family: trebuchet ms;"> was playing on her mini-Papasan chair last night &amp; fell out of it. I told her &#8220;Be careful&#8221;. To which my child replied, &#8220;Oh I am so clumsy, Mama!&#8221; with such glee that I felt I had to correct her.</span></p>
<p><span style="color: #333399; font-family: trebuchet ms;">I said, &#8220;Being clumsy is not something to be proud of, Ro. You don&#8217;t want to be clumsy, </span><span style="font-style: italic; color: #333399; font-family: trebuchet ms;">you want to be graceful.&#8221;</span></p>
<p><span style="color: #333399; font-family: trebuchet ms;">My child then screamed, as she ran from the room, &#8220;</span><span style="font-weight: bold; font-style: italic; color: #333399; font-family: trebuchet ms;">NOOOO</span><span style="color: #333399; font-family: trebuchet ms;"> Mommy! Don&#8217;t turn me into </span><span style="font-style: italic; font-weight: bold; color: #333399; font-family: trebuchet ms;">that!!&#8221;</span><span style="color: #333399; font-family: trebuchet ms;"> Yep. That&#8217;s my daughter.</span></p>
<p><span style="color: #333399; font-family: trebuchet ms;">Ro also said her first, </span><span style="font-style: italic; color: #333399; font-family: trebuchet ms;">and I hope <span style="font-weight: bold;">only,</span> for a very looong time</span><span style="color: #333399; font-family: trebuchet ms;">, swear word on Wednesday&#8230;&#8221;Damn it!&#8221;</span></p>
<p><span style="color: #333399; font-family: trebuchet ms;">She gets that from me. I admit it. </span><span style="color: #333399; font-family: trebuchet ms;">And I am working on that. </span><span style="font-style: italic; color: #333399; font-family: trebuchet ms;">But it could have been much worse. </span><span style="color: #333399; font-family: trebuchet ms;">She could have dropped an </span><span style="font-style: italic; color: #333399; font-family: trebuchet ms;">F~bomb, </span><span style="color: #333399; font-family: trebuchet ms;">as I have read recently on some other Mommy Blogs.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-style: italic; color: #333399; font-family: trebuchet ms;">Wouldn&#8217;t that have been lovely on Christmas Eve.</span><span style="color: #333399; font-family: trebuchet ms;">..&#8221;Go say hi to Grandma &amp; </span><span style="color: #333399; font-family: 'trebuchet ms';">Grandpa</span><span style="color: #333399; font-family: trebuchet ms;">, Ro.&#8221; </span><span style="font-style: italic; font-weight: bold; color: #333399; font-family: trebuchet ms;">&#8220;F@&amp;$!, hi!!&#8221;</span><span style="color: #333399; font-family: trebuchet ms;"> Yep. That would have gone over</span><span style="font-style: italic; color: #333399; font-family: trebuchet ms;"> like a Ho in church</span><span style="font-style: italic; color: #333399; font-family: trebuchet ms;"> with</span><span style="font-weight: bold; font-style: italic; color: #333399; font-family: trebuchet ms;"> two </span><span style="font-style: italic; color: #333399; font-family: trebuchet ms;">Pimps</span><span style="color: #333399; font-family: trebuchet ms;"> at my Mexican, Catholic In~Laws&#8217; house<em> (I would have gotten the blame for that one, even though my Hubs uses it waayyy more than I do)</em>! Maybe she will never say it again&#8230;a Mama can pray, right?</span></p>
<p><span style="color: #333399; font-family: trebuchet ms;">Speaking of In~Laws&#8230;they did their annual name draw for the Christmas </span><span style="color: #333399; font-family: 'trebuchet ms';">Gift Exchange</span><span style="color: #333399; font-family: trebuchet ms;">. We weren&#8217;t there for it because Hubs had to work on </span><span style="color: #333399; font-family: 'trebuchet ms';">Thanksgiving</span><span style="color: #333399; font-family: trebuchet ms;">. Again. My FIL called to tell us who we got in the exchange&#8230;Hubs got his Mom &amp; I got his sister. </span><span style="font-weight: bold; font-style: italic; color: #333399; font-family: trebuchet ms;">Oh Joy!!</span></p>
<p><span style="color: #333399; font-family: trebuchet ms;">She (SIL) didn&#8217;t make a list this year&#8230;</span><span style="font-style: italic; font-weight: bold; color: #333399; font-family: trebuchet ms;">Double Joy!</span><span style="color: #333399; font-family: trebuchet ms;"> She likes leopard print. Her whole family wore leopard print pajamas &amp; Santa hats for their Christmas picture last year. She brags that she can wear the same size as her youngest daughter. Apparently she raids the teen&#8217;s closet, now that she has had gastric bypass surgery <em>(a </em></span><em><span style="color: #333399; font-family: 'trebuchet ms';">total</span><span style="color: #333399; font-family: trebuchet ms;"> cop~out for her).</span></em></p>
<p><span style="color: #333399; font-family: trebuchet ms;">Maybe I will just get her a gift certificate for </span><span style="font-style: italic; font-weight: bold; color: #333399; font-family: trebuchet ms;">Ho&#8217;s R&#8217; Us.</span><span style="color: #333399; font-family: trebuchet ms;"> They ought to have a </span><span style="font-style: italic; color: #333399; font-family: trebuchet ms;">ton</span><span style="color: #333399; font-family: trebuchet ms;"> of inappropriate clothing for a 40+ year old woman with no fashion sense!</span></p>
<p><span style="color: #333399; font-family: trebuchet ms;">&#8220;Tis the Season&#8230;&#8221;</span>
