Book: The LAST Snowman Review And Giveaway

JCLittle_SNOWman_BOOK-cover-KDP2-555 Every once in a while, I get offered a review for a product or person I adore. It doesn’t happen as often as I would like, but I am very happy to say that today is one of those days. If you have never heard of JC Little, The Animated Woman, you are missing out. She wrote and animated the book The LAST Snowman, for her then-thirteen-year-old daughter. It’s a heartwarming  story about a teen, wet, spring snow and one very tall snowman. Apparently wet snow isn’t so great for snowman making after a certain height. Though I wouldn’t know this because I’ve never seen snow fall, much less actually made a snowman. Yes, I’m almost forty-three years old and have never been in the snow. Shut it.

The Diva loved the book so much, that she used it as one of her entries on her weekly reading log for school. She also took the The LAST Snowman to school and showed it off, proudly telling her friends — well, anyone within earshot, really — that the magical book she was holding was written by one of her mommy’s friends and that she was going to be on the internet with her own picture and everything. Apparently mommy having a blog is super cool to Miss Ro. Heh.

The book is available in both paperback and Kindle versions. The Kindle app version is only $3 — what a deal! — and is rather unique in that it is designed to “animate” in the page flips. This is not something I have ever heard about  before with an eBook and I think that feature sets it apart from all other Kindle illustrated books. I think each time the reader plays with the page flipping in the app, it changes the whole experience of the book. How cool is that?

I only got the paperback version. No electronic interaction over here, but that doesn’t matter because the book itself is so well-written and perfectly illustrated. JC has a very unique ability for words and art and when she puts them together, it’s magic!

A brief description of The LAST Snowman by JC Little:

“This afternoon it snowed. It was probably one of the last snows of the winter, so it was lovely sticky snow…perfect for making a snowman.” So begins the funny and poignant tale of a teenage girl and a dangerously tall snowman.

From the kitchen window, a mother watches her teenage daughter build one last snowman in the fresh spring snow. The girl works diligently, and with some help from her little brother, she constructs a dashing giant. But wet snow and gravity take their toll, leaving a young girl who has perhaps loved and lost for the very first time.

The LAST Snowman is a book with timeless appeal for children and adults alike. Award-winning story artist JC Little has playfully captured a tender “moment” in family life, marking the ephemeral grace between childhood and adolescence.

JC is one of those rare combinations of wit, talent and heart. She is quite amazing, an award-winning artist and one of my three favorite Canucks. If you have a child, this book is for you.
