Rest In Peace, Mr. Zo
My beloved cat, Zoë, was euthanized by what was supposed to be a NO KILL shelter. Why? Because he was too old to be adopted. I am beside myself with grief. We could no longer keep him, for various reasons, so I researched to find a NO KILL shelter that would have no problem with the fact that he was 10 years old and would find him a good home where he could live out the rest of his life. I SPOKE to these people repeatedly and they told me that his age was not an issue, he would still be placed for adoption and they would not euthanize him.
THEY LIED.
And now I feel like a murderer because I PAID these people to take my beautiful Mr. Zo and they killed him.
I hope he can forgive me. I hope I can forgive myself.
He was my first baby. I loved him so much.
Rest in Kitty Heaven, my beautiful boy. I’m so, so sorry. We miss you so very much.

I called them to see if he had been adopted or put in a foster home yet. They told me he had been euthanized. I lost it.
This is so sad and unfair, but u really have nothing to feel guilty about, you did everything you could

I still feel like I failed him.
So, so sorry, Shan — I can only imagine how your heart must be breaking right now. Even though you know it isn’t your fault — I mean, you made sure it was a no-kill shelter and that age wasn’t an issue — I would also feel the way you are feeling. Thinking of you.
It is my fault. I took him to the shelter. I miss him so much. I was hoping he’d be adopted by a nice family, instead he was killed. And no one he loved or was familiar with was there with him. He must have been so scared. And pissed off.
Hugs. I would put a complaint in against them with the state. I would demand your money back. Lets catch up tomorrow.
I don’t think there is any way to do that, Sarah.
Oh no…I am so, so very sorry. I’m in tears right now because I can only imagine the pain you must feel. I have 4 kitties and love them the way you loved him. It would break my heart.
I am so sorry Shan (hugs)
Thanks, Jen.
This is the most heart-wrenching post I’ve read online since I can remember. I’m so sorry for your loss. Losing a pet is always so much harder than you expect, especially with cats, who love to be physically close to their humans. That shelter should be shut down. Keep your head up, it was definitely not your fault. Some people and businesses just choose to betray the trust of unsuspecting people.
I am so sorry for your loss. What a horrible shock to you.
That being said, no kill shelters don’t kill what they consider to be adoptable animals, but if you read their “rules” they will put down animals that end up with health problems or do not adjust to shelter life. Having worked and volunteered with our animal shelter for the past 15 years, I can tell you that it’s very rare for a senior cat to adjust to life in a cage, even for a short amount of time. I’m guessing your kitty was put down “due to age” because it was miserable in a shelter environment – hiding in his litter box, hissing at people who came by, and acting in a manner that would not find him a new home any time soon, thus forcing him to live even longer in cage. Please try not to feel cheated or scammed by the shelter, if they chose to put him down, I’m guessing it was in his best interest as opposed to living a miserable life in a cage where he was scared.
Hugs to you.
