Reason #31 Why You Should Not Introduce Your Kids To The Music You Grew Up On

[ 9 ] August 14, 2010 |

Back in June, I found one of those 80’s compilation CD’s on clearance at Target. You know the ones…

So this one was 80’s New Wave. Right up my alley. I am a child of the 80’s. I graduated high school in 1989.

Yes, I’m old. So?

I played this in the car. The Diva loves it.

SCORE. The kid inherited my taste in music.

But there is a problem.

On this CD are:

The Cure- Just Like Heaven

English Beat – Mirror In The Bathroom

A Flock Of Seagulls – I Ran

Soft Cell – Tainted Love

INXS – The One Thing

Thomas Dolby – She Blinded Me With Science

Adam Ant – Goody Two Shoes

XTC – Senses Working Overtime

Joy Division – Love Will Tear Us Apart

Peter Schilling – Major Tom (Coming Home) <~~~ The main reason I bought the CD

New Order – Bizarre Love Triangle

Yaz- Situation

Pet Shop Boys – West End Girls

Echo And The Bunnymen- Lips Like Sugar

Violent Femmes – Blister In The Sun

Frankie Goes To Hollywood – Relax

I’ll give you 1 guess as to which song The Diva likes most.

Got it?

Ok, here it is.

Relax.

Yes. THAT song.

The one by the completely gay band who’s videos were so filled with homo erotica that they were banned in some countries. Yes, I’m not kidding. This band came out {Ha! Double entendre} in the 80’s. That was back when Madonna’s Like A Virgin, Like A Prayer and Papa Don’t Preach were controversial. Today, they’re considered tame. I mean, when songs like Milkshake and Oops! There Go My Pants are normal, a little song about cumming and gay sex is nothing, right?

The Diva announced this while we were driving. My Husband and I were laughing so hard I thought I was going to crash. Then we got the fear. The fear that she will be singing this song in class. And then we imagined what the phone call from the teacher would be like.

Yep. That school is either going to love me or hate me. Or be very afraid of me.

The jury is still out on that one.

Now, for your viewing pleasure is Relax by Frankie Goes To Hollywood. Uncensored.

This is the version we were allowed to see:

And this, is the BEER COMMERCIAL featuring a reggae version of the song:

That’s OK, my 9yo’s favorite CD is Offspring – Greatest Hits. Favorite song is “Hit That.” My 3yo asks for Nickleback’s “Burn it to the Ground” as soon as I plug in my Zune in the car. He KNOWS it’s on there, even if I’m not in the mood to hear it that day. Oh, and my kids like Metallica, Green Day, Twisted Sister, and Alice Cooper. I can’t wait to get calls from other parents LOL.

  2. I love the 80’s!!! I do not censor my music for my kids. I figure that they will hear it eventually and if they have questions they can just ask me.

I still can’t believe how prudish the USA is, I can’t figure out if it’s sad or just plain funny!

*laffin* Too funny. I adore 70’s and 80’s rock so you can imagine some of the horrors mine would love given that there were any children over here to inherit musical tastes… then again the child just might adore Styx and that would be fine by me!

cant be any worse than Nate singing Flo Rida Right Round. Not my personal choice but his dad listened to it. We also listen to what Amanda does as well.

  6. Yeah, I am with Amanda – my 4 year old can sing that idiot Ke$ha word for word (trashy… she listens at her Dads) and my 11 year old loves Three Days Grace…. *sigh*

I have some songs I listen to (yeah, in the car)that my kids can’t even sing to cause there is a word or two in them they aren’t even allowed to say. And don’t even get me started about the radio hosts in the morning that talk about sex and my kids are in the back seat on the way to school asking questions like “Whats that mean?” etc….. Maybe Your daughter will have a 20 something teacher who has never even heard the song (wishful thinking).
